Universal Design in Higher Education edited by Sheryl E. Burgstahler and Rebecca C. Cory

If you’re looking for a manual on how to apply universal design in your college/university classes, don’t bother reading Universal Design in Higher Education (Cambridge, MA:  Harvard Education Press, 2008).  Chapter authors do a good job of explaining what universal design is, but the book is theoretical rather than practical despite the subtitle:  From Principles to Practice. The principles predominate, and there is little on actual practice.

It also focuses more on meeting the needs of students with disabilities over those with varied learning styles, which faculty members are more likely to have in class.

The book has chapters on implementing universal design in instruction, services, information technology, and physical spaces in higher education.  There is also a chapter on institutionalizing universal design.

Star Trek: Department of Temporal Investigations: Forgotten History by Christopher L. Bennett

According to Christopher L. Bennett, Forgotten History (New York:  Pocket Books, 2012) “is both a sequel and a prequel to [his] previous novel, Star Trek:  Department of Temporal InvestigationsWatching the Clock” (347).  As nearly as I can tell, in Forgotten History, Bennett mentions all of the time traveling incidents from the original and animated series.  Forgotten History was easier to follow than Watching the Clock because there were fewer new characters and subplots to follow.

I haven’t been able to find out if there are more books to come in the DTI series.

Changes to Zakta Website

Yesterday I received an e-mail message that included the following paragraph about changes to the Zakta website:

As you may have noticed, we recently updated the main Zakta.com site to provide a company overview of all the technologies and products we now offer.  The original Zakta.com search and guides functionality is still intact — it continues to be available at http://zakta.com/zakta but it is now branded zGuides.  There is no other functional difference whatsoever to this tool.

Guardians of the Keep by Carol Berg

Carol Berg‘s Guardians of the Keep (New York:  Roc-Penguin, 2004) is the second book in her fantasy series The Bridge of D’Arnath.  I actually like this book better than the first one in the series, Son of Avonar, which I wrote about a couple of weeks ago.  Though sections of Guardians of the Keep are told from the points of view of four different characters, it is easier to follow than  Son of Avonar, which had numerous lengthy flashbacks.

I’m looking forward to reading the third book in the series, The Soul Weaver.

A Conspiracy of Violence by Susanna Gregory

A Conspiracy of Violence (London:  Time Warner Books, 2006) is the first of Susanna Gregory‘s novels about Thomas Chaloner, a former English spy who finds himself unemployed in Restoration London.  (The monarchy was restored in 1660.)

Chaloner, who goes by the name Thomas Heyden, spied in the Netherlands for Cromwell’s government under the orders of John Thurloe.  Chaloner must use all his skills to find employment and solve multiple mysteries that are all linked.

Susanna Gregory is the pseudonym of a Cambridge academic who was previously a coroner’s officer. Her series of mediaeval mysteries have gained a formidable following” (Susanna Gregory; emphasis added).

Sequels in the Chaloner series include

  • Blood on the Strand (2006)
  • The Butcher of Smithfield (2008)
  • The Westminster Poisoner (2008)
  • A Murder on London Bridge (2009)
  • The Body in the Thames (2011)
  • The Piccadilly Plot (2012)
  • Death in St. James’s Park (2013)

Gregory has also written a series of medieval mysteries featuring Matthew Bartholomew.  The first novel in the series is A Plague on Both Your Houses.  The eighteenth novel in this series, Murder by the Book, is scheduled for release in April 2013.
